In almost all of his novels the protagonist is a war veteran, which he himself was. He was known to travel the world. He married his first wife, Hadley Richardson, who was eight years older, and had a son named John, a.k.a. â€Å"Bumby†. They divorced in 1926, the year The Sun Also Rises was published, and married the rich Pauline Pfieffer in 1927. They had two sons, Patrick and Gregory, and bought a house in Key West, Florida. Hemingway and Pfieffer divorced in 1940, and Hemingway fell in love married again in 1940 to Martha Ellis Gellhorn. Martha was also an effective journalist and write about the conflicts of the Spanish-American War, World War II, Vietnam, and other issues in the middle East. The marriage ended when she left him five years later; she was the only one of his four wives to leave him. Ernest married again to Mary Welsh, a stunning blond journalist from Minnesota, in 1946. In 1953-54, He and his wife Mary survived two plane crashes, which left him with a fractured skull, dislocated shoulder, and injured spine; this time it really hindered his ability to write. He received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea, and received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. At the very least, the treatment will consist of a host of medications that have many side effects, must be taken daily for life and are extremely expensive. The sounds of bats cracking and overbearing parents screaming surrounded me on my walk to the quads. A cumbersome pink bag weighing me down because of my fragile size was the first indication that I was new to this sport. It only got worse as I entered the dugout and unzipped the bag. Out popped a pink and black glove with a princess emblem stitched on the thumb, a florescent pink helmet, and a metal bat too long for me. The girls in the dugout snickered, but I held my head high. Momma always said, â€Å"Sticks and stones, Kaitlin.† The coach was number seven’s dad who wore a baseball cap that, quite frankly, irritated me because we were a girls’ softball team, and boys had cooties. Turns out, number one, number ninety-nine, and number six all had their dorky looking, know-it-all dads on the clay with them as well. I think about my first day on the unfamiliar softball field often. I was discouraged and heartbroken, and wondered if I would ever have the â€Å"good life† of a father in the stands. But in his unintentional way, my father gave me the good life. His absence taught me that the good life is learning to swing the bat myself without scanning the stands for his presence.
